16. English as an Additional Language

Halcyon represents 40 nationalities in our community and a host of different languages are spoken throughout our school. This cultural diversity makes for a vibrant and exciting environment in which our young people can grow and develop.

Our new English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme is designed to provide academic instruction and support for English language learners. The programme will meet the needs of students who

  1. have at least a working proficiency in English; and
  2. can be expected to exit the EAL programme, and enjoy success in a first-language English class, within 12 – 18 months of enrolment.

In Grades 6 – 10 the EAL Programme will develop students’ English language proficiency and will be delivered in place of the language acquisition programme. Students will also attend first Language English classes and the regular English medium classes, providing an immersion experience.

In Grades 11 – 12, the rigour of the IB Diploma Programme will require students to be proficient in English in order to be successful. However, we do offer English Language B HL/SL to Diploma students as a second language course. These students still need to study a Language A (mother tongue) programme.
