Cognitive Coaching at Halcyon

All our teaching staff are completing stage 2 of their foundation course in Cognitive Coaching run by Thinking Collaborative to support our student mentoring programme. During the course, they learn techniques such as:

  • utilise conversation structures for planning, reflecting and problem resolving
    develop teachers’ autonomy and sense of community
  • develop trust and rapport
  • develop higher levels of efficacy, consciousness, craftsmanship, flexibility and interdependence
  • apply four support functions: coaching, evaluating, consulting, collaborating
  • utilise the coaching tools of pausing, paraphrasing, and posing questions
  • use data to mediate thinking

This links heavily to the techniques used in the IB curriculum in order to encourage students to think consciously and reflect on actions, both within the class and within themselves and those around them.
