The Benefits of an Innovative Orientation

At Halcyon, we are a thinking community, guided by a belief that an exceptional education will draw out, nourish and awaken the unique potential of each student. Halcyon’s Vision is Education: from educe meaning “to draw out”. As such, our learning environment is committed to innovative and holistic learning; nurturing engaged, reflective and responsible, life-ready, global citizens.

Building on the foundations of the IB, Halcyon does not formally assess its students on test scores but rather monitors student’s work on academically challenging and balanced projects with students only sitting final examinations aged 18.

A recent article attests that “The more students focus on test scores, the less creative they become”.

Students benefit from being inspired by their learning and their learning environments. They need to be able to incorporate 21st century life tools in their learning, along with creativity and collaboration.

“When one is building a ship, one does not begin with gathering timber and cutting planks, but rather by arousing in people the yearning for the great wide sea.”
— Antoine de St. Exupery (1900-1944), Aviator & Writer

Halcyon believes that test scores form only part of the assessment and that through innovative curriculum and delivery methods students leverage their engagement. Students learning in an innovative environment are much more likely to be innovators themselves: desire to discover new ideas and engage with their learning.

We encourage you to read further evidence on the inverse relationship between test scores and innovation here.
