On Saturday 12 March, five Halcyon students met Ms Rose and Mr Costa at Highgate Wood School for the 2016 North London MUN Conference. The theme of the Conference was “A Place Called Home? Refugee and Migration”. The day began with opening speeches from Headteacher Patrick Cozier and MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, Catherine West.
The five delegates then split into their respective committees for debate. Nate represented France in the UNHRC, as they debated the topic of “Refugee as a human right”; Ellie represented Mexico in the Women’s Refugee Committee, discussing the issue of “Protecting female refugees from violence and exploitation”; Alexi stood as the Turkish delegate for the Security Council as they discussed responses and actions in regard to “The Syrian Civil War”; and Nathan and Kieran were both in the UNRWA, discussing the issue of “Palestinian refugees” and representing the USA and Israel respectively.
Each of the delegates chose challenging roles and committees and we are very pleased to announce that our students won four awards at the closing ceremony:
- Nate (Grade 10): Best Delegate Award for his thorough research and contributions to debate
- Kieran (Grade 10): Honourable Mention for his tactful responses to discussion on a sensitive topic (Kieran also won an award for Best Tie)
- Nathan (Grade 10): Most Distinguished Delegate Award for his effective participation
- Ellie (Grade 10): Most Distinguished Delegate Award for her effective participation (Ellie also won an award for Best Accent)
To win four awards out of a possible 12 (3 in each committee), at a conference of over 250 delegates, is incredibly impressive! Congratulations! A very enjoyable and informative day was had by all and we look forward to the next one.
