Sonja Bartholomew, Mathematics Teacher

I am an enthusiastic specialist mathematics teacher who enjoys a practical, interactive and investigative approach to teaching and learning. In the classroom my main aim is for all of my students to enjoy my subject and to achieve this I encourage a challenging and supportive environment.

Before joining Halcyon, I worked at three other IB World Schools in Switzerland and the UK. I have considerable experience of the IBMYP and IBDP curricula as a classroom teacher, head of mathematics, IBDP coordinator and most recently as an examiner.

I also explored the IB programmes during my studies with the University of Bath. This included evaluating how the IBDP can be used as a vehicle to encourage internationalism and how assessments in the IBDP can be used to enhance understanding.

I was born and grew up in the Netherlands and moved to England to complete my bachelor’s degree in Economics at the University of Lancaster. As a student, I spent much time supporting a charity working with children and young adults with special needs and it was this experience that inspired me to become a teacher. I went on to complete a PGCE with conversion to mathematics at the University of Nottingham.

Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Mathematics from Nottingham University (UK)
