Sonja Bartholomew, Mathematics Teacher

Sonja is an enthusiastic specialist mathematics teacher who enjoys a practical, interactive and investigative approach to teaching and learning. In the classroom her main aim is for all of her students to enjoy her subject and to achieve this she encourages a challenging and supportive environment.

Before joining Halcyon, Sonja worked at three other IB World Schools in Switzerland and the UK. She has considerable experience of the IBMYP and IBDP curricula as a classroom teacher, head of mathematics, IBDP coordinator and most recently as an examiner.

Sonja also explored the IB programmes during her studies with the University of Bath. This included evaluating how the IBDP can be used as a vehicle to encourage internationalism and how assessments in the IBDP can be used to enhance understanding.

Sonja was born and grew up in the Netherlands and moved to England to complete her bachelor’s degree in Economics at the University of Lancaster. As a student she spent much time supporting a charity working with children and young adults with special needs and it was this experience that inspired her to become a teacher. Sonja went on to complete a PGCE with conversion to mathematics at the University of Nottingham.
